An Interview With Dotdotennis

An Interview With Dotdotennis

Dotdotennis is an artist based in Hong Kong. She has a popular online store dedicated to fun, expressive tennis merchandise and routinely shares her of-the-moment creations on social media. We commissioned her to create an artist postcard of Coco Gauff to celebrate the launch of the new issue. Below, she shares how she formed her illustration style and passion for the sport.

When did your love of tennis start? How did it become something you decided to illustrate and make art about?

When I was little, I loved Rafa Nadal so much. My brother and I watched every Fedal final back then. I hadn't followed tennis for over 10 years, until the Covid-19 pandemic started. I had so much spare time, and I started watching tennis again. Also, I started learning how to play tennis.

I've always enjoyed creating funny doodles, and I find that there are so many funny interactions between the players. So I draw them out and share them with other tennis fans.

How did you come up with the name dotdotennis?

I am also a handpoke tattoo artist, and my artist name is “dotbyedot.” It means going dot by dot to finish the tattoos. Basically, I was too lazy to think of another artist name, so I kept the “dot,” and it is dotdotennis now. [Laughs]

What are your favorite players and tournaments?

My favourite players are Rafa Nadal and Andrey Rublev. To be honest, the first time I watched Andrey play was the match when he beat Rafa in Monte Carlo 2021. I felt sad for Rafa's loss, but Andrey’s game really got me! And I started following his journey, too! I really love their intensity for the game and their fighting spirit.

I love the clay tournaments especially Monte Carlo and Madrid. There are many long matches to enjoy! I really want to visit these tournaments when I have the chance!

You often illustrate very tender, sweet, in-between moments that show players' humor, personalities, and friendship. What draws you to these moments?

I think tennis is a lonely sport, especially for singles players. I noticed there are many beautiful friendships on tour, and I really love them! Also, I really like the young players. They are so funny, and most of them really respect each other.

How did your creative style develop?

At the beginning, I tried to draw tennis players in a realistic style, but I found it boring and not creative enough, so I decided to draw them in cartoon styles and just keep it simple.

What do you most enjoy about sharing and selling your art on Etsy, Redbubble, and social media?

I think the most important thing for me is to share my happiness with other tennis fans. I feel so happy when people say that they enjoy my products. It’s a win-win!

What do you most appreciate about Coco Gauff as a tennis player? How did you feel when she won the US Open?

Coco is super talented, and she has achieved so much at such a young age. I personally really like the fact that she plays both singles and doubles, and that she does so great in both! Also, I really like her serve. I think it is a big weapon of hers.

I'm so happy for her success at the 2023 US Open! Winning a major in her home country must have felt so good. I really hope she can keep up the good work and win more majors in the future.

What did you enjoy about creating this illustration of Coco? Any favorite details?

The postcard design is fun! I enjoyed drawing the tiny elements there: the racquet, fruits, and the trophy! Also, I tried to draw Coco’s eyes in a different style from what I usually do, and I think it came out good.

You share less about your personal life on your account. Is there anything else you want people to know about you or your love of tennis?

I never had a chance to play tennis, but I started playing when I turned 28. Tennis makes me so happy. I can play for the whole day and never get bored! I have made some friends because of tennis, too. I always feel grateful for that. Tennis makes me happy!
